The Balvenie 12 Year Old Double Wood is a wonderfully mild Single Malt Scotch and one of the most popular Speyside Whiskies. The malt shines with a brilliant amber color in the glass and is characterized by its distinctly sweet aroma, where sherry notes, vanilla, and honey come together. There’s also a pleasant hint of orange peel. On the palate, a complex profile develops with fruity orange notes, spicy cinnamon, and fresh heather, all connected by an elegant sherry sweetness and a fine malty and nutty note. In the long finish, the connoisseur finds gentle malty notes brightened by pronounced vanilla. A hint of smokiness comes from a brief peating of the malt.

Why 'Double Wood'?

The Robbie Dubh spring supplies the two distilleries of the Grant family, Glenfiddich and Balvenie, with pure Highland spring water. At least part of the barley used, which is still malted in their own floor maltings, comes from the Balvenie Mains Farm. The Balvenie 12 Year Old Double Wood matures - as its name suggests - using the so-called 'Double Wood' method: First, it ages for about 10 years in former bourbon casks, before being transferred to used sherry casks for the last two years, a process known as 'finishing'. Malt Master David Stewart is a true master of cask maturation and has been creating excellent single malts for Glenfiddich and Balvenie for years.

Dufftown - The Malt Whisky Capital

The Balvenie 12 Year Old Double Wood is a particularly fine single malt whisky from the distillery of the same name, which has been located in Dufftown in the heart of Speyside, Scotland, since 1892. The founder was the legendary William Grant, who had founded the famous Glenfiddich distillery right next door a few years earlier. This second distillery was named after Balvenie Castle, whose ruins are also in close proximity. To this day, both distilleries remain in the ownership of the Grant family, one of the key players to whom we owe the popularity of whisky from Scotland today.
