Fruity, intense, and with lots of honey & marzipan - this is how GlenAllachie 12 years tastes

The GlenAllachie 12 years is characterized by intense marzipan and raisin notes. Equally exciting are the sweet banana and honey notes of this robust Speysider. In fact, GlenAllachie surprises with its full body, which is rather atypical for whisky from Speyside. The 12-year-old provides a good insight into the honey-laden profile of the Scottish distillery. The generous use of sherry casks is also well highlighted here. A portion of fresh oak casks contributes sweet vanilla and caramel tones. Fortunately, GlenAllachie standardly avoids the use of coloring and chill filtration. Thanks to the use of active sherry casks, color correction is not necessary - the Scotch shines in a dark, almost mahogany hue. The 46% ABV manifests itself in the whisky's robust body as well as in the form of a slight ginger spiciness on the tongue.

A new era at GlenAllachie

For a long time, single malt whisky from this distillery was only available from independent bottlers like Gordon & MacPhail, but with the takeover by Billy Walker, the former master blender of the Benriach and Glendronach distilleries, the distillery is focusing on original bottlings. Under his leadership, the distillery's style is clearly oriented towards strong sherry cask maturation. One gets a first impression of what this can mean here, without being overwhelmed.

For fans of classic Scotch whiskies

Especially fans of the Glendronach distillery can look forward to a kindred distillery at GlenAllachie. And yet, it shows its own unique style. The sherry cask plays a significant role: fruity raisins, rich plum notes, sweet marzipan, mild almonds, and bitter coffee and oak notes showcase the full spectrum of the Andalusian liqueur wine cask. But that's far from all. What Billy Walker has brought to GlenAllachie from his time at GlenDronach is the eye for the quality of the casks: the sherry casks used here are all first or maximum second fill casks, which is evident not only in the intense coloring but also in the intense aromas. Nevertheless, the GlenAllachie 12 years is balanced and leaves room for strong heather honey notes. Overall, the whisky, despite modern cask management, surprisingly appears classic in its aromas. Those who already know the Balvenie 12 years Double Wood or have tested and found good whiskies from Benriach and Dalwhinnie will find another exciting distillery with a similar character at GlenAllachie.
