The Laphroaig 10 Year Old is one of the most famous, internationally awarded single malt whiskies from the world-renowned 'Whisky Island' Islay, located between Scotland and Ireland. It comes from one of the three legendary distilleries on the southern coast. Laphroaig is the westernmost distillery, situated close to the town of Port Ellen, from which the barley is sourced. Laphroaig is located right by the shore, so during high tide, the warehouses are washed by seawater - yet this does not detract from the quality of the whisky!

The two brothers Donald and Alex Johnston founded the distillery in 1815 based on an illicit still that their father had operated for decades. It remained in the possession of the Johnston family until 1954 - which is quite extraordinary compared to the tumultuous history of most Scottish distilleries! The following decades were marked by several ownership changes until 2005, when it was acquired by the French spirits company Pernod Ricard.

Bottled at 40%, the Laphroaig 10 Year Old is a typical Islay whisky characterized by an intense aroma and strong flavor characteristics: On the nose, distinct peaty and smoky notes are immediately noticeable, complemented by woody elements, seaweed, iodine, and sea salt, creating a truly medicinal aroma. After a while, however, softer and fruity notes reminiscent of ripe pears emerge. On the palate, the complex body presents the aforementioned components and delights with a light sweetness that pairs very well with the smoky-peaty notes! In the finish, peat and smoke repeat, enhanced by a touch of malt and a hint of vanilla!

In the Whisky Bible 2019, Jim Murray selected the Laphroaig 10 Year Old as the best whisky in the category of Single Malt Scotch Whisky 10 years & younger (Multiple Casks) .
