The Caol Ila 12 years is a classic child of the rugged Scottish west coast island of Islay. The Single Malt is characteristically known for its fresh and sparkling aroma of iodine-rich sea air, which then transitions into a strong smokiness. On the nose, we find a heavy yet sweet peat smoke, as if drinking cloudy pear juice by an open fire right by the sea. On the palate, Caol Ila surprises us with strong malt aromas and a dry summer meadow, which is then also covered by oily peat smoke. An unmistakable Islay whisky! In the long finish, the Caol Ila 12 years convinces with a floral finale. A slightly singed barley field bids us farewell with a strong mocha note. The Caol Ila 12 years has a great price-performance ratio in the realm of heavily peated island whiskies. Definitely try it if you want to bring a campfire into your glass!

A True Island Child

In the Atlantic Ocean lies the Inner Hebrides, an archipelago off the northwest coast of Scotland, which includes the southern island of Islay. Islay, pronounced 'Eila' by the locals, is widely known for its distilleries that primarily produce heavily peated and smoky whisky. On the southern coast of the island are the most famous Islay representatives and tourist magnets Lagavulin, Laphroaig, and Ardbeg. Caol Ila, on the other hand, is an unassuming distillery with industrial charm, but it does not have to hide in terms of smoky single malts from its prestigious neighbors. It is located on the northern east coast of the island not far from the ferry port of Port Askaig, which has now also been dedicated to a Port Askaig Single Malt. In immediate proximity, there is another traditional distillery Bunnahabhain and the new Ardnahoe Distillery. For over a decade, Caol Ila slumbers in oak barrels in the distillery's warehouses right by the sea until it is ready to make its way to us.
