The Isle of Raasay 2018/2023 Distillery of the Year Quercus humboldtii Finish Special Release was distilled in August 2018 and bottled in August 2023. This makes it the oldest single malt the distillery has released so far. The distillate originally matured in former bourbon casks from Four Roses/Kentucky and then enjoyed an extraordinary finishing in virgin oak casks of the type Quercus humboldtii, meaning first-fill oak casks from Colombia. This special maturation resulted in consistently delicious notes of vanilla, caramel, butterscotch, crème brûlée, dark cherries, and slightly spicy spices.
Unlike most other Raasay releases, this whisky is made entirely from unpeated Concerto barley malt. As always, the single malt was bottled without colorants and chill filtration for the sake of quality. The latter preserves flavor-carrying substances such as fats, oils, and esters. A solid alcohol strength of 50.7% Vol. delivers a full-bodied tasting experience and adds even more power to the already intense aromas. Thus, the whisky, fully produced on the Isle of Raasay, is a natural delight and something truly special as a special release.
