Traditional Single Malt from the Scottish Highlands

The Dalwhinnie 15 years comes from one of the highest distilleries in Scotland, which is also the most remote. Founded in 1897 by John Grant, Alexander Mackenzie, and George Sellar under the name Strathspey, and now known as Dalwhinnie Distillery, it is located about 40 kilometers from Speyside, in the Scottish Highlands. The source of the water for Dalwhinnie, the so-called Lochan an Doire-Uaine, is situated at over 600 meters above sea level in the Drumochter Hills. From there, the spring water flows over peat-rich soils to the distillery, which has exclusive rights to this water. Therefore, no other distillery can replicate the unique taste of Dalwhinnie.

15 years matured – super price-performance

This Dalwhinnie matures slowly and gently for at least 15 years in casks that previously held bourbon (there is likely also a small proportion from former sherry casks). Good Scotch whisky needs time. And the Dalwhinnie 15 gets plenty of it. This leads to a very balanced mix of fruit, vanilla, and wood aromas in the single malt. Particularly noteworthy is the high age of this single malt in relation to the comparatively excellent price-performance ratio. A 15-year-old malt is usually no longer available in this price range.

The golden whisky with 43 percent alcohol is crisp and dry in aroma with typical, light hints of heather and honey. On the palate, it first unfolds a gentle, long-lasting taste of heather, honey sweetness, and vanilla, which then transitions into stronger influences of citrus fruits and malt bread. In the finish, the taste is surprisingly persistent with a fine malt flavor. It is therefore also excellent for beginners. Thus, the taste of Dalwhinnie delivers a certain, not excessive complexity that clearly distinguishes it from other whiskies. Tip: Much of this is noticeable when tasted neat, but you can dive deeper into the complexity by adding a quarter spoonful of water. This reveals components that would otherwise remain hidden.

From one of the highest and coldest distilleries in Scotland

The altitude of the Dalwhinnie distillery also means that it has one of the lowest average temperatures of all Scottish distilleries. This is also reflected in the whisky. Due to the low temperatures, the whisky matures particularly slowly, leading to a fine, balanced maturity – as is absolutely desired in Scotch whisky. A connection to the low temperatures around the distillery was also made in 2015 with the release of the Dalwhinnie Winter's Gold. A whisky that was exclusively distilled in winter and thus has a particularly heavy character.

The Dalwhinnie whisky comes in a rather low, bulbous bottle that feels heavy and valuable in the hand. The bottle is also packaged in a cream-colored gift box that features golden ornaments. In large letters, the name of the distillery and the age statement – the Age Statement – of 15 years is emblazoned on the bottle. I like the Dalwhinnie 15 years – which other whiskies should I try?

In addition to the Dalwhinnie 15 years, the Dalwhinnie distillery also produces the Dalwhinnie Distillers Edition. This first matures in American ex-bourbon casks and is then transferred for a finish – the completion – into Spanish Oloroso sherry casks. These give the whisky a particularly nice fruity note and color. A must for fans of Dalwhinnie 15 years. Sherry casks are significantly more expensive, which is why the Dalwhinnie Distillers Edition is also somewhat pricier than the Dalwhinnie 15 years. If you like Highland whisky, you should definitely try the Edradour 10 years from the independent small Highland distillery.
