Aroma: A dry and earthy smoke note, tending towards ash, is present. It is softened by maritime notes - salt from the spray, citrusy ginger, and wild herbs evoke the rugged Atlantic coast. It becomes more voluminous and softer later with sweet caramel notes and vanilla pudding, while the oak spice shows itself in the form of nutmeg and clove spice.

Taste: Vanilla pudding spreads across the tongue - a wonderfully velvety feeling with citrus freshness leaning towards pineapple, ripe apple, and sweet apricot. Coconut adds even more exoticism. Over sweet honey notes, maritime smoke lays with a salty note.

Finish: Medium-long with plenty of dry smoke, but also fresh oranges, mangos, and overripe bananas, as well as freshly ground coffee beans.

This Port Charlotte is a smoky single malt from Bruichladdich.

The malt matured for 10 years primarily in former bourbon casks. Additionally, 65% First Fill Bourbon Casks were used, which makes the influence of American oak in the form of vanilla, caramel, coconut, and exotic fruits very present in this release. A smaller portion also came from French wine casks. The full-bodied vanilla notes from the bourbon cask are especially noticeable on the palate, while the oak casks from France dominate more in the nose and finish. The European oak of the French wine casks has a higher tannin content, which is clearly expressed in the form of bitter coffee notes in the finish. A smoky whisky that can impress with fruity wine notes. The aromas appear very precise, reminiscent of the clear air of a sunny winter day.

The American magazine Whisky Advocate named the Port Charlotte 10 Year Heavily Peated one of the best whiskies of the year in 2018.
