Scotland is famously notorious for its smoky whiskies. This 10-year-old Ballechin proves that it doesn't always have to be Islay. Since 2003, the highly experimental Highland distillery Edradour has been producing a heavily peated version in addition to its classic non-smoky whisky Edradour. Here, you can expect a full, oily Highland Malt with plenty of toffee and caramel notes that blend with the intense malty smoke. The different cask types enrich the Ballechin 10 years with various flavor components like fruit notes and vanilla. The Ballechin Single Malt whisky is named after a farm distillery in Perthshire called “Ballechin,” which closed in 1927, and today represents the smoky and peaty whiskies of the charming Edradour Distillery at the foothills of the Cairngorm National Park in the Scottish Highlands.

How was the Ballechin made?
The malt for this single malt whisky has a strong peaty aroma with at least 50 ppm (English 'phenol parts per million'). This is roughly equivalent to the peat content of Islay whiskies like Laphroaig and Ardbeg, although the smoke here is less maritime as we are dealing with Highland peat. The Ballechin 10 years matures in the finest casks made of American and European oak. For the 10-year bottling of Ballechin, both whisky from ex-bourbon casks and whisky from Oloroso sherry casks were used, which add additional depth and complexity to the whisky. Naturally, the Ballechin 10 years was bottled without chill filtration or the addition of colorants at 46% vol. This makes the smoky Highlander a powerhouse that you can savor for a long time. We particularly recommend this Ballechin 10 years to fans of smoky whiskies from Islay who want to venture into new territories and expand their horizons with Highland peat.
