The aroma of the amber-colored Bunnahabhain 12 years is defined by its distinct saltiness, which can be explained by the distillery's location right on the coast. Neither chill-filtering nor color adjustment with caramel affects the original taste of this delightfully maritime Single Malt whisky! After a few moments, a malty sweetness develops, made even more interesting by beautiful wood notes. On the palate, one immediately notices a sweet base character, where nutty elements blend with a hint of peat and a touch of sea air. Thanks to the use of Spanish sherry casks during the maturation of this whisky, we get great fruit aromas and nuttiness, while the ex-bourbon casks provide a robust portion of vanilla aromas. The long finish presents itself with pronounced freshness and fruity notes. A Scotch to linger over!

A true sailor

The Bunnahabhain 12 years comes from the northernmost distillery on Islay. It nestles in a bay on the northeast coast of the island, right on the shore of the narrow Islay Sound, which separates Islay from the neighboring island of Jura. The 4.5 miles between Bunnahabhain and the ferry port of Port Askaig also feature the long-established Caol Ila distillery and the young Ardnahoe Distillery. Bunnahabhain was founded in 1881 and has been part of Burn Stewart Distillers Ltd. for about ten years.

The required water comes from the Margadale River, which flows into the sea just a few hundred meters north of the distillery. Since the barley is not or only very lightly peated, Bunnahabhain belongs to the few very lightly peated Islay whiskies and resembles more a whisky from the further north Orkney Islands. It is bottled at a robust 46.3% in wide, low bottles with the well-known sailor label. The 12-year-old Bunnahabhain has been bottled as a Single Malt for 40 years and is thus one of the true classics of Scotland! In 2016 and 2017, the old sailor was able to take home a Gold Medal at the San Francisco World Spirits Competition, and in 2014 and 2018 even Double Gold! You should convince yourself of the great quality of this coastal whisky.

Bunnahabhain (tariama "Bunnahäven") yra įsikūrusi šiaurinėje rytinėje Islės salos pakrantėje, kuri garsėja savo stipriai durpėmis dūminiais viskiais.
