The Bunnahabhain 18 years offers a full 46.3% alcohol and a pale amber color, being uncolored and non-chill filtered. The whisky delights the nose with aromas of sherry, spices, and ripe apples. On the palate, it develops a rather dry, slightly peppery, nutty flavor. The finish is dominated by various spices, caramelized fruits, oak, and plenty of sherry.
The Bunnahabhain was allowed to mature for 18 years before being bottled uncolored and non-chill filtered. The distillery is located off the beaten path in the north of Islay in a quiet bay. Since 2003, under new management, they continue to produce the typical whisky style with a maritime note. Because the water used for it is naturally filtered through limestone, the flavor can be particularly refined. The house style is fresh with a sweet note, yet also nutty and reminiscent of herbs.
Upon opening the bottle, the Bunnahabhain 18 years releases its typical sea aroma and also hints of nuts, ample caramel, and oak. As the palate makes first contact with the amber liquid, a balanced and aromatic interplay of oak and nuts unfolds. Fortunately, mild sherry notes can also be tasted, but there is also a hint of pepper and nutty flavor on the tongue. Even though the house style has been taken over by the new owner, the individual aromas are noticeably more intense due to the higher alcohol content. The finish is once again characterized by spices, caramelized fruits, oak, and the sherry aroma.
