The German Windspiel Gin from the Eifel is unusually made from a potato base. The potatoes come from the Vulkaneifel. Whether one can still taste the special characteristics of the soil in a repeatedly distilled spirit is debatable, but the recipe of lavender, cinnamon, and juniper creates a delicate overall picture that impresses with its mildness - despite 47% alcohol volume. Windspiel Gin is a classic London Dry Gin. The inspiration for the name was found in none other than Frederick the Great and his idea of cultivating potatoes in these regions.
